Condoms and Nonoxynol-9

Mon, Mar 17, 2003; by Anton.

Nonoxynol-9 is a spermicidal lubricant used on most condoms in the UK. It has been shown to kill HIV in vitro (in a test tube). In vivo (in living people), the effects are indecisive. In sensitive people, it might actually increase the likelihood of HIV transmission because it is definitely an irritant.

Reputable organisations can tell you more:

The World Health Organisation and Nonoxynol-9

Planned Parenthood and Nonoxynol-9

The advice from various organisations is never use spermicidal condoms for anal sex, and only use them for vaginal sex if you have a low chance of contracting HIV and need the extra contraceptive protection. Use an alternative lubricant.

What sex activist Carol Queen said in 2002

Unfortunately, nonoxynol-9 is the only spermicide that is available in the UK either on the NHS or to buy.
